Ahoy. My last name is actually McElfish. I am a 3rd year doctoral student in the Mehta lab, and I am interested in all the stages that lead up to a successful foraging event. I am using fish (….well…mostly morays…) as a model to connect sensory morphology to foraging behavior, starting at the community level (rocky reefs off Santa Catalina Island) to the family level (Muraenidae), and lastly to the species level (Gymnothorax mordax). Mostly I want to know how fish detect and locate prey in spatially complex habitats…and for those slippery eels…how do they eat stuff spatially confined areas?
